Patient and Family Services Department

The Patient and Family Services Department provides information and ongoing support to patients and their families through four integrated psychosocial service areas: social work/case management, psychology, education, and child life. It also coordinates Children's Clinics' volunteer program.

Social Work/Case management

  • Assess child and family psychosocial needs
  • Guide and support families adjusting to diagnosis
  • Develop effective partnerships with families
  • Support and promote the medical treatment plan in a family centered way
  • Provide information regarding community resources and other agencies

Psychology

  • Provide counseling relative to diagnoses and treatment
  • Develop approaches to manage or modify behavior
  • Perform assessment and evaluation as needed for medical treatment planning
  • Consult with school and community professionals
  • Facilitate referrals to community behavioral health agencies or private providers

Education

  • Guide parents/guardians toward becoming effective educational advocates
  • Provide outreach, training and advocacy for children to schools and teachers
  • Assist in preschool transition, high school transition and vocational planning
  • Arrange homebound services when patients cannot attend school regularly
  • Provide educational testing

Child Life

  • Prepare patients for medical experiences
  • Assist patients with relaxation/distraction to ease anxiety over medical experiences
  • Provide support to siblings during a patient's clinic visit
  • Provide play opportunities to foster social interactions within the clinic
  • Coordinate special events and clinic programs for patients and their families

Volunteer Program

  • Coordinate the recruitment and placement of volunteers within the clinic and placement of high school and university student interns within various clinic departments
  • Provide clinic-wide tours to community groups or individuals interested in volunteer or community service
  • Coordinate community resources for donations
  • Coordinate special guest visits to the clinic for family entertainment
